The Inter-American Heart
Foundation (IAHF, for the Spanish Acronym) has developed a library for
all tobacco control research studies conducted in Latin America and the
Caribbean (LAC, for the Spanish Acronym).
The library’s main objectives are:
- To facilitate the availability of research studies developed in
the region on tobacco control-related topics.
- To develop a situation diagnosis regarding works in progress or
finished projects.
- To identify the lack of or gaps in tobacco control evidence in
LAC useful to set research priorities.
- To provide a reliable and detailed source of tobacco control
research projects which constitutes a useful tool for the
decision-making progress regarding tobacco control public policies
and advocacy.
- To facilitate the development of a network of researchers to
enhance their communication, coordination and teamwork opportunities
by maximizing the effective use of resources, thus avoiding the
extra effort of developing similar or hard-to-compare projects.
- To learn about the main funding opportunities to be able to
expand and enhance resources.
- To promote public knowledge and usefulness of research studies
which have not been published in indexed journals.
- To encourage the publication of research studies in indexed
journals to maximize its dissemination and use in public policy
changes.
- To promote collaboration between more developed and technically
qualified countries and less developed countries within the region.
- To reduce the gap between research and advocacy by increasing
the possibility to transform scientific results into public policies
and thus fulfil the ultimate goal which is to reduce tobacco
attributable morbid-mortality and to improve the heath of the
population in LAC.
